It’s a sad day here at Diamond Racing as we announce the retirement of champion trotter SUNDEES SON.

Last week we felt that Sunny wasn’t feeling himself so we had X-Rays and a CT scan done at Rangiora Vet Centre Equine. The results were sent to a specialist in the UK to be analysed and showed that Sunny has some mild underlying bone bruising. While he will heal well from this with rest, there is a chance it will reoccur under fast work/race conditions. Yesterday afternoon we held a round table with vet Sam Taylor, Craig Edmonds and owners Colin and Nancy Hair to discuss what was best for Sunny. Ultimately we decided that Sunny has been an absolute champion and owes us nothing so we made the decision to do what was in his best interests and retire him.

We can’t thank everyone who has been involved in Sunny’s care during his career. From Ross Houghton who broke him and did all the work with him as an early 2 year old, to Craig Edmonds who has been Sunny’s strapper, travelling companion and farrier for the past few years, Sam Taylor and the team at Rangiora Vets, Barb Hunter and the team at Matamata Veterinary Services – Equine, all of our staff and of course Colin and Nancy for trusing us with Sunny for the last 5 years.

After the round table yesterday we put a saddle on him and rode him down the beach, and again this morning and he has taken very well to being ridden. Sunny will now spend the next couple of weeks on the water walker to let down and then will likley have a long spell over winter before being properly started under saddle in the spring to being his life as a riding horse. We’re sure there will be lots of people putting their hand up to ride him, but decisions will be made in future based on the best interests of Sunny.

We will keep you updated over the coming months with the first video diary `being posted later today.
